Ancient DOS Games --- Episode 118

Worthy Opponent

Additional Information and Corrections:

  • You probably shouldn’t use port 5000, since it’s directly related to Universal Plug and Play stuff. :P

  • Many of the options you can adjust in the game are done from the Help menu of all things. Sound effects are turned on and off outside of the Help menu, but you need to go there first to learn which key combination to push... which DOESN’T work until you close out the Help menu... The program is surprisingly NOT user-friendly. Then again, this was released in 1988 when user friendliness wasn’t exactly something programmers typically put much thought into. :/

  • There’s also a chat system which works much like an old modem terminal in that both players can type at the same time using a single text cursor. Thankfully, the program at least differentiates who’s typing by using different text colours.
